You build it by designing for three properties that living systems have and most businesses do not: the ability to correct itself without you, the ability to absorb a shock and reorganize without losing what it is, and the ability to survive the loss of any single part. Same discipline as everywhere else. The biology first, stated as it is, and then the correspondence, named as a correspondence. I will tell you where each one stops being science and starts being a reading.
The biology. Your body holds its internal temperature within about a degree while the world outside it swings forty. It does this through negative feedback loops, which is the plainest engineering idea there is. A sensor detects a departure from a set point, a response is triggered, the departure reduces, the response stops. You sweat, you cool, you stop sweating. Blood glucose, blood pH, fluid balance, calcium, all of it runs on the same shape. Walter Cannon named it homeostasis in the 1920s and it remains one of the most durable ideas in physiology.
Where it stops. In a body these loops are automatic and involuntary. Nobody decides to sweat. In a business, nothing is automatic. Every feedback loop you have is one someone built on purpose, wrote down, and maintained, and every loop you do not have is a place where the sensor is you, noticing, at eleven at night.
How you build it. A loop needs three parts and most businesses have one. They have the response, which is the founder reacting. What they lack is the set point, meaning the number you have decided in advance, and the trigger, meaning the thing that fires without anyone watching.
So pick one thing that keeps going wrong and give it all three.
Cash is usually the easiest place to start. The set point is a floor, say three months of operating cost. The sensor is a number you actually look at on a fixed day. The trigger is what happens automatically when the floor is approached, and it is decided now, in calm weather, rather than later in the middle of it. Capacity works the same way. The set point is the number of clients past which quality drops, and you already know that number. The trigger is what stops intake when it is reached.
The test of a real loop is simple. If you went away for two weeks, would it still fire? If the answer is no, you do not have a loop. You have a habit, and habits do not survive a busy month.
The biology. In 1973 C.S. Holling drew a distinction that changed how ecologists think about stability. Engineering resilience asks how fast a system returns to equilibrium after a disturbance. Ecological resilience asks something else: how much disturbance a system can absorb before it reorganizes into something fundamentally different. The first is about speed of recovery. The second is about how much the thing can take and still be itself.
Holling later described this as an adaptive cycle, with systems moving through growth, then consolidation, then release, then reorganization, and around again. The release phase is not failure. It is a structural part of how living systems keep going.
Where it stops. Two things. Ecosystems reorganize without intent, and nobody decides what a forest becomes after a fire, whereas a business reorganizing without leadership does not reorganize, it dissolves.
And this one is worth sitting with: resilience is not the same as good. A degraded system can be extremely resilient. A shallow lake tipped into a turbid algae-dominated state is famously hard to shift back, precisely because it is stable. Businesses do this. A company can be remarkably resilient in a shape that is quietly making everyone in it miserable, and the resilience is what makes it hard to change.
How you build it. Start by naming what has to survive. Write down the three or four things that, if they changed, would mean this is no longer the business you built. Usually it is who you serve, the standard you hold, and something about how the work gets done. Everything not on that list is available for reorganization, and knowing which is which in advance is what lets you move fast in a bad quarter without panicking about identity.
Then notice which phase you are in. Growth is when everything you try works. Consolidation is when the thing is running and efficiency is rising and flexibility is quietly draining out, and this is the most dangerous phase because it feels like the best one. Release is when something breaks. Reorganization is the messy part where the pieces get put back differently.
Most founders treat consolidation as the destination and release as failure. In the cycle they are two phases of the same loop, and a business that has never released anything is usually not stable, it is brittle.
The biology. Organisms carry more of some things than they strictly need. Two kidneys. Two lungs. Multiple metabolic pathways to produce the same molecule. Duplicated genes that let one copy take on a new job while the other keeps the original function running. The redundancy is why a localized failure stays localized.
There is a refinement here worth knowing, because it changes what you build. Biologists distinguish redundancy, meaning identical parts doing the same job, from degeneracy, meaning structurally different parts that can perform the same function. Degeneracy turns out to be far more common in biology and considerably more robust, because different structures fail under different conditions and rarely fail at once.
Where it stops. In a body, redundancy is close to free, because cells copy themselves. In a business every redundancy is paid for, monthly, in salary or subscription or attention. Carrying two of everything is not resilience, it is overhead. So the question is never how much redundancy, it is where.
How you build it. Find the single points first. There is a fast way to do this. List the ways work actually arrives, the ways it gets delivered, and the people who know how something is done. Then ask what happens tomorrow if any one of them is gone. The ones with no answer are your single points, and there are usually fewer than you fear and at least one you did not expect.
Then apply degeneracy rather than redundancy. You do not need a second person identical to the one who holds a thing. You need a second, different route to the same outcome. If all your work arrives through referral, the answer is not more referral sources, it is a route that does not depend on a network at all. If one person holds a process, the answer is often the process written down clearly enough that someone else could run it, which costs a morning and not a salary.
And accept the cost honestly. Every route you add is a route you maintain. Two well-maintained ways in beat five neglected ones, every time.
There is a structural principle that takes this further, where the rigid parts of a system are held apart by a continuous web of tension rather than bolted to each other, which is what keeps the whole thing light enough to move and strong enough to hold. That is tensegrity, and it has its own note.
Build them in the sequence above, because each one rests on the one before it.
Feedback loops come first, because without them you cannot see the system clearly enough to know what to reinforce. A founder without loops is running on sensation, and sensation is loudest about whatever happened most recently.
Resilience comes second, because deciding what must survive is only meaningful once you can tell what is actually happening. Name the core too early and you will name the things you are attached to rather than the things that matter.
Redundancy comes last and it is deliberately last, because it is the expensive one. Add it before the first two and you will duplicate the wrong things, and pay for it every month, and feel more fragile rather than less.
This is also why most conventional planning goes sideways. It starts from a target and works backward through tactics, which produces a plan that only holds if very little changes. What most of this industry calls strategy is a structure that worked somewhere else, laid over a business it was not designed for. Building for these three properties instead produces something less exciting on a slide and considerably harder to knock over.

No, though they overlap and are often confused. Sustainability is mostly about environmental impact, which matters and is a different subject. This is about structure, meaning how the organization is arranged and whether that arrangement is one that lasts. A business could apply everything on this page and have nothing at all to say about its carbon footprint.
No, and it is arguably more useful when the team is small, because a small team is where single points of failure concentrate. Solo founders and small teams have the most to gain from feedback loops and from having at least one alternative route to every essential thing, because there is no slack absorbing the failures.
